If you’re driving on 11th Street in Heights Beyond the Hando Roll Hando restaurant, you may have to squint to see the activity in a dim and narrow room right next door. This is Hando’s new bar, Kanpai Club, and is now open at 518 W 11th St.
Enter Ando and go through the door immediately left to enter the Kanpai Club. You’ll find a 400-square-foot bar that looks a bit like an urban alley, which was the intention of owners Jason Andia and Ray Chan. Kanpai Club contains 10 seats and aims to be both a place for drinking and pre-endo flooding and also a place to stay in the neighborhood whenever it is open until 2am on weekends.
It’s also a place where Andaya and Chan, from the Family Meal Group, hope to test some food items before making their way to Ando, an easy achievement as the two concepts share a kitchen. For now, the Kanpai Club menu includes a few small Hando dishes, such as Brussels sprouts, with Japanese mayo sauce and katsu, and wagyu Gyoza, with mushrooms, shallots and scallions. But there are also some exclusive items for the Kanpai Club, like waffle chips topped with Japanese brown curry, crispy chicken crunch and flatbread topped with salmon, yuzu kosho and micro-coriander.
Also look for some cocktails just for Kanpai-Club, including the rough rye-based Jamma Slamma Jamma and seasoned in winter. There is also an abundance of Japanese whiskey and even Japanese rum on offer. Plus, the bar has a deep selection of Japanese beers (matcha IPA, anyone?), Along with sake and wine.
Kanpai Club is open from 16:00 until midnight Sunday-Thursday and from 16:00 until 02:00 Friday-Saturday. Happy hour is offered daily from 16:00 to 18:00 and includes special bites, such as wasabi shumai and croquette curry.
