In its sixth edition, Diageo World Class continues to look for Lebanon’s best mixologist and last week selected Mike Casbian from SAPA’s best bartender in Lebanon to represent his country in the global final held in Mexico in August.
Participants from a number of bars in Lebanon teamed up with international and local mixology experts to take part in Burst 1 and Burst 2 of this year’s World Class competition in Sapa and Garcia and six bartenders qualified for the finals: Mo Nana from Jackie O, Gerard Alam from The Tippler, Hadi Hermanani from Bistro Hamra Bar, Mike Xavian from SAPA, Sally Saba from the Voil Kusaifi train station from Discotheque.
I was there in the competition and the participants created cocktails using great brands including Johnny Walker Blue Label, Ketel One, Zacapa, Don Julio, Cîroc and Tanqueray No. Ten.
Winner Mike Casbian prepared a Tanqueray-based cocktail number ten called “The Fountain of Life.” The cocktail included in addition to Tanqueray basil, aloe vera oil, aged camphor chamomile and pink grapefruit.
For those interested, I made sure to put my hand on the full recipe to try it at home:
4 basil leaves
One drop of aloe vera oil
50 ml Tanqueray N10
20 ml lemon juice
20 ml simple syrup
Old-fashioned 10 ml campari (pre-washed barrel of chamomile tea)
Mix the ingredients in a shaker
Shake with a clear block of ice, strain double in a short glass
Decoration: Grapefruit zest for aroma
Congratulations to Mike and good luck in the World Cup in Mexico.
